Rich Fulcher has a nice way of interpreting the core definition of design which can be boiled down to just five words:
We study USERS who have a certain CONTEXT, and we create TOOLS for them to perform TASKS in order to achieve higher-level GOALS.
DESIGN = USERS + CONTEXT + TOOLS + TASKS + GOALS
